I'll Be There For You

"I'll be there for you.  These five words I swear to you."

I joined in with one of my favorite gal pals for karaoke one weekend as we sang those sweet words to one another from the bottom of our hearts.  I could see truth in her eyes.  I'll be there for you... After nearly 25 years, I believe her.

While booking my two new one way tickets to Honolulu the other day, my new friend seemed a bit aggravated and frustrated.  Being the peace maker I am, I jumped right in. "What's wrong?"  "Nothing time won't heal," he responded in a cold and heartless voice.

I tried to be honest and straight when we first met.  I said things like "I'm not sure I even want a relationship." "I'm leaving in a few weeks." "I can't focus on a relationship right now. I have serious things I have to focus on."  "Let's take it slow and we'll see what happens." I even tried to help him protect his heart.  "I really don't think you should to be kissing me."

So...of course he let go of his control over his mind and allowed Satan to attack.  He believed I only wanted what he had to offer.

Furious, instead of saying, "Dude...you offered. I didn't ask." I said, "It is up to you on how you choose to see things."

Just last night I was let down.  I waited on a call from someone that was going to offer a helping hand through his resources.

A wise woman recently said to me, "They wanted to keep their word, but they couldn't.  People have good intentions but they all let you down."

The moral of the story, like a friend recently wrote about, people will let you down.  You are the only person you can count on.

Whether it's being happy, having a great job, feeling the love that we all need, helping someone else, forgiving friends that tried to be there, changing that horrible habit or doing what God has called you to do...we can't depend on others, only ourselves.

Our strength comes from within and that is why we are to protect the heart.  Because if we give it away and our expectations break it, our strength will be gone.

At 30 years old, I finally understand the verse..."Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life." Proverbs 4 :23 New Living Translation

Just like our spiritual gifts, the heart must be for the kingdom of God instead of our own selfish desires.

I believe a dear friend tried to teach me such a while back. He said something like, "Take the deep love you feel and use it."
